Smart Film® Sealant
Smart Film® Sealant is a one-part, non-slump, moisture-curing RTV (room temperature vulcanizing) that cures to form a tough, high modulus rubber with long-term flexibility and durability. The neutral curing mechanism of “Smart Film® Sealant” is ideally suited for use in confined work areas since no objectionable odors are evolved. The non-slump characteristics of “Smart Film® Sealant” allow application to vertical or horizontal joints without flowing or sagging. “Smart Film® Sealant” neutral cure silicone has excellent resistance to weathering including ozone, ultraviolet radiation, freeze-thaw conditions and airborne chemicals. After cure, the wide heat stability range of “Smart Film® Sealant” is from -57°C to +204°C (-70°F to 400°F) and the sealant can be applied to surface temperatures from -18°C to +50°C (0°F to +120°F).
Smart Film® Sealant serves as a durable, versatile sealant/adhesive ideal for numerous Smart Tint®, Smart Film® applications. Its adhesion capabilities extend to a vast range of substrates without the need for priming. For instance, it effectively adheres to unprimed chrome and stainless steel, where other high modulus silicone sealants would typically necessitate priming. With its unique properties, “Smart Film® Sealant” functions impressively as a formed-in-place gasket, showcasing minimal swell, low compression set, and robust oil resistance. These attributes equip it with a balanced combination of properties to prevent leakage in demanding environments such as engines, transmissions, water pumps, rear axles, and oil pans. However, it is advised not to use Smart Film® Sealant in cylinder heads, exhaust manifolds, or in direct contact with fuels.
Smart Film® Sealant is a ready-to-use product, requiring no additional mixing or additives. The curing process initiates as soon as the sealant comes into contact with the air. Under typical conditions of 25°C (77°F) and 50% relative humidity, the sealant skins over within 10-20 minutes, cures within 24 hours when applied as a 1/8″ bead, and achieves full cure strength in approximately 7 days. The curing process is expedited by higher humidity levels. Any tooling should be performed before skinning occurs. In scenarios where the sealant is partially or totally confined, the curing duration typically extends, influenced by the degree of confinement.
Normally, Smart Film® Sealant does not require priming for application to most substrates. The effectiveness of its unprimed adhesion can be easily tested by applying a small trial bead and allowing a period of 7 days for maximum adhesion to occur. Smart Film® Sealant demonstrates superior unprimed adhesion to a variety of substrates.
